The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says it is ready to assume governance if the President and the Prime Minister tender their resignations.
Speaking during a media briefing today, Parliamentarian SM Marikkar said the formation of an interim government was in direct contradiction to the people’s struggle.
MP Marikkar said they have not received a public mandate to form a government adding solutions cannot be provided to the public’s demands through an interim government.
The Parliamentarian said there are concerns whether the country could request assistance from the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, European Union or the Asian Development Bank considering the views of Leftist Parliamentarians who declared themselves independent of the government.
He said certain groups are attempting to form an interim government with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the helm adding however the public will not accept such a government since they are demanding the immediate resignation of the Head of State.
On a separate note, MP SM Marikkar requested the government not to suppress the people’s peaceful struggle through riots.
The MP said such actions could lead to a dire situation adding the responsibility for such a situation must be borne by the present administration.
He said the government misused the public mandate and passed the 20th Amendment to the Constitution in Parliament giving unprecedented authority to the Head of State.
MP Marikkar said MP Basil Rajapaksa also entered the Parliament through the 20th Amendment.
The MP said however the government has now lost the public mandate.
