Acting President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe says the Ukraine war must come to an end at the earliest.
Participating in an international panel discussion focused on “Preventing Global Hunger and Famine”, the Acting President said sanctions by Western countries will not bring Russia to its knees but will bring the third world countries to their knees.
The Acting President commented that more and more people will die of starvation across the world, if the Ukraine war continues.
Speaking on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe suggested that Russia must call for a ceasefire immediately.
The Head of State added that Ukraine must also be willing to hold talks without imposing conditions on its neighbor.
Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe also stressed that the entire world cannot be held hostage due to a conflict in Europe since where 300 million people across the World are affected by famine as a result of the war in Ukraine, global supply chain issues and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Acting President Wickremesinghe also claimed that Sri Lanka is experiencing food shortages, due to the import ban on fertilizer.
Sri Lanka is currently producing only 16 million MT of rice as opposed to the required 24 million MT.
The Acting President also reiterated that Sri Lanka’s economy will contract by 6% this year and due to its impact on small and medium scale enterprises, there is a threat of more job losses in the coming year.
Acting President Wickremesinghe also confirmed that G7 nations and the World Bank are providing Sri Lanka USD 14 million to obtain food and increase agriculture productivity.
