The United National Party says the current price increases and inflation have impacted the wellbeing of children severely.
The UNP said officials must be prepared to deal with malnutrition in future since poverty-stricken families are struggling to feed their children.
Speaking during a media briefing at the UNP headquarters Sirikotha today, Chairman Vajira Yapa Abeywardena said during the previous UNP-led administration, the country was self-sufficient in rice.
He said however, the government has now taken measures to import rice from India and several other countries.
Former Minister Vajira Yapa Abeywardena noted that prices of big onions, limes, tomatoes, capsicum, carrot, beans, brinjals, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, bitter gourd, lady’s fingers and greens such as gotukola have increased exponentially.
He said the public will not be able to afford a healthy meal adding that the present government within a short time has managed to chase the people away from the country.
The UNP Chairman stressed that their government kept the prices of essential commodities at a manageable level while taking forward meaningful development projects.
He said due to the inefficiency of the present administration, within two years, the country is heading towards a major disaster.
The UNP Chairman noted that former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe managed to stabilise the failing economy after taking over the country in 2015.
He said the country is heading towards disaster in all spheres and therefore the public should identify who can in fact run the country and save Sri Lanka from bankruptcy.
According to the UNP Chairman, only former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe can change the fortunes of the country.
He also expected all factions irrespective of party differences to rally under a common programme and ensure sustainable development in Sri Lanka.
