Several trade unions in the health sector are engaged in an indefinite strike across the island from 7am today, based on several demands including salary anomalies.
The Academy of Health Professionals said several health professionals including nurses, medical laboratory scientists, pharmacists and Public Health Inspectors joined the strike.
Speaking to media this morning President of the Association Ravi Kumudesh said the continuous trade union action is regrettable adding however they have no alternative as no responsible faction has come forward to provide solutions.
He added the strike will continue until favourable solutions are provided to their demands.
Ravi Kumudesh said however 10 hospitals providing essential services were excluded from the strike and informed the government that they will withdraw from services at the relevant hospitals if favourable solutions are not provided within a week.
The Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Sirimavo Bandaranayake Specialized Children’s Hospital, the Castle Street Hospital for Woman, De Soysa Hospital for Women, Teaching Hospital Mahamodara, Kethumathi Maternity Hospital, the Colombo South Kidney Hospital, Polonnaruwa Kidney Hospital, the National Blood Bank, cancer hospitals, maternity hospitals and the National Institute of Infectious Diseases have been excluded from the strike action.
Ravi Kumudesh and union members have threatened to withdraw from services in all hospitals if authorities failed to meet their demands in a week.
