The Irrigation Department says water is being released from main reservoirs for the Maha season this year.
Director of Water Management at the Irrigation Department Engineer D Abeysiriwardena said water from the Senanayake Samudraya, the biggest reservoir, was released at the auspicious time of 8am today following religious and traditional activities.
Abeysiriwardena said water will be supplied to one million acres for harvesting purposes.
Abeysiriwardena said the water supply for the Maha season will not be disrupted.
He said the water levels in the main reservoirs as a whole is currently around 45 percent.
Abeysiriwardena added plans are in place to commence the Yala season before the scheduled date.
He noted 500mm of rain is expected in the coming months adding the water supply will not be affected under any circumstance.
