The Department of Irrigation says it may take several days for water in mainland to recede into rivers.
The Irrigation Department urged the public to refrain from panicking as flood water may take several days to recede even if rains subside.
Speaking to media, Director of the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the Irrigation Department, Engineer SPC Sugeeshwara said minor floods in low-lying areas adjacent to the Gin and Nilwala rivers are still prevalent with main roads and byroads still inundated.
He however said flood levels are receding with no increase in floods expected.
Commenting on the water levels in reservoirs, the Director said floods caused by the Kalu River spilling over in low-lying areas in the Bulathsinhala Divisional Secretariat continues adding however an increase is not expected as flood levels are decreasing.
He said the Kalu River is expected to return to normalcy by tomorrow.
Sugeeshwara said minor floods could still continue in certain low-lying areas adjacent to the Attanagalu Oya while water levels of the Kelani River have reduced.
