The Department of Irrigation says the water levels of the Kalu, Gin and Nilwala rivers have increased in certain areas due to incessant rain.
The Director of Water Management S.P.C Sugeeshwar said the risk of minor flooding in the lowlands surrounding the Kalu River in Ratnapura, Elapatha, Nivithagala, and Kuruvita Divisional Secretariat areas may increase as the Department of Meteorology has predicted 100mm of rainfall in such areas tonight.
The Director requested the public residing in low-lying areas to remain vigilant of possible flooding and warned motorists using by-roads near the Kalu River to be wary of floods.
Director Sugeeshwar further warned the residents of the lowlands of the Bulathsinhala and Palinda-Nuwara Divisional Secretariat areas of minor flood levels worsening due to heavy showers
