Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian SB Dissanayake says he does not agree on providing relief for consumer goods.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, MP Dissanayake claimed many people are using water and electricity services without any savings due to relief provided for the services.
The Parliamentarian further claimed prices of fuel, domestic gas, essential items, and cost of living are increasing in all countries.
He said the government is providing water and electricity at a very low cost per unit resulting in the public overusing the services.
MP Dissanayake said the public will be more careful when using utilities if the government charges the actual cost per unit.
The MP said the public will travel without considering if the government does not increase domestic fuel prices.
When questioned by media over the price of fuel reducing in the world market, MP Dissanayake said the public need not worry over the matter as the price reduced from the highest point reported in recent times.
On a separate note, he claimed the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a time to cut salaries and not increase them.
The MP said under the prevailing conditions protests based on various demands should not be allowed in Sri Lanka.
MP Dissanayake said everyone must intervene to resolve issues without forcing individuals to trade union action resulting in the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
He urged the government to take steps to stop all such actions instead of giving in to demands.
The MP claimed the United States and the United Kingdom are summoning state employees on a roster basis and only pays 40%-60% salaries for those who do not come in.
He further claimed governments of Japan and India suspended all salary increments and no employee took to the streets in protest.
MP Dissanayake said the government must not allow anyone to take to streets.
