The United National Party has commended the government’s efforts to heed the advice of former Prime Minister and leader of the UNP Ranil Wickremesinghe and seek the support of the International Monetary Fund.
UNP Chairman Former Minister Wajira Abeywardena speaking at a media briefing yesterday said the former Premier a year ago requested the government to seek IMF support.
Abeywardena said even though delayed, seeking IMF support at present is a positive move adding that other financial institutions too will recognise Sri Lanka when such crucial decisions are reached.
The former Minister also claimed that the government’s failed economic policies following the breakout of the coronavirus led to the present situation.
He said new laws were introduced including regarding financial and economic regulations adding that Sri Lanka however failed to enforce such decisions.
Wajira Abeywardena said Sri Lanka is currently in an economic tangle.
