Members of Parliament are currently voting to elect a new Deputy Speaker of House.
The secret vote was called after two names were proposed for the vacant position.
The opposition proposed the name of Matale District Parliamentarian Rohini Kumari Wijerathna while the government nominated the name of Hambanthota District MP Ajith Rajapakse.
Although several MPs opposed the move to conduct a vote to elect a Deputy Speaker, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said unless a name is withdrawn, under Standing Orders he is compelled to conduct a vote.
The Speaker then provided an opportunity for both the government and opposition factions to withdraw their nominations.
However, following a stalemate, the Speaker announced that a vote will be conducted to elect the Deputy Speaker.
Meanwhile, at the commencement of today’s session, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has accepted the resignation of Ranjith Siyambalapitiya as the Deputy Speaker, effective 6th of May.
