The All Ceylon Joint Economic Centre claims vegetables will not be distributed on Thursday to economic centres in the island.
The decision was reached following a request by a number of economic centres, including the Colombo Manning Market, to not distribute stocks of vegetables as a hartal is being organised on the 28th.
Chairman of the Centre Aruna Shantha Hettiarachchi said the decision was reached in a bid to protect vegetable farmers.
He said farmers are gravely affected by the decisions reached by the government more than a year ago to suspend the use of chemical fertiliser.
Hettiarachchi charged that farmers’ produce has been affected, adding that failure to protect farmers will result in all citizens being affected.
Hettiarachchi said farmers cannot breath today thanks to the actions of the government.
He charged that a Rs.1,600 bundle of fertiliser is now being sold at Rs.28,000.
