Various groups have called on authorities to immediately release former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake who is currently serving a four-year rigorous prison sentence after being found guilty on a case filed on charges of contempt of court.
During a discussion convened yesterday, the group requested the Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe to release Ranjan Ramanayake through a Presidential pardon.
Speaking during the discussion, Asela Sampath said Minister Rajapakshe is scheduled to meet the former Parliamentarian to discuss a Presidential pardon.
Sampath said the negative image surrounding the Justice Minister will be resolved if necessary and prompt steps are taken to facilitate the release of Ranjan Ramanayake.
He said however, former MP Ramanayake must be released in a manner that he will be allowed to continue as a public representative.
