Family Health Bureau Consultant Dr. Kaushalya Kasthuriarachchi says a majority of expectant women who succumbed to the coronavirus since the outbreak of the virus, had not received a single vaccine dose.
Dr. Kasthuriarachchi said from 2020 to date, 12,431 expectant women contracted the coronavirus, 161 in 2020, 11,268 in 2021, and 1,003 in 2022.
She noted that 60 expectant women succumbed to the virus last year while one expectant female died this year of COVID-19.
Dr. Kasthuriarachchi claimed that 70 percent of expectant women did not have symptoms of the virus.
She also claimed that 5,945 women among the group of expectant women who tested positive had not obtained a single vaccine dose.
Dr. Kasthuriarachchi added with the increase in vaccinations a significant drop in pregnancy related deaths have been witnessed.
She said 69 among the 1,003 expectant women who contracted the virus thus year have not obtained a single vaccine dose.
