Members of the United National Party are expected to join the on-going struggle staged by youth groups and activists demanding the resignation of the government and for a change in the prevailing political system in the country.
Although the UNP has been staging separate Satyagraha campaigns to express its opposition over the conduct of the present administration, following requests from the youth, party leader former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to permit the members to participate in on-going protests.
The on-going protests have gained momentum in the last few days with large gatherings in strategic locations in Colombo.
According to a statement by the UNP, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the party’s activists to support the youth struggle peacefully after coordinating matters with Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene.
