Railway employees threaten to launch a massive trade union action if the government attempts to restructure or sell Sri Lanka Railways to the private sector.
The Railway Trade Union Alliance claims that the government is attempting to sell valuable lands that belong to the Railway Department in a bid to acquire US dollars.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Co-convenor SP Vithanage said they will not allow any faction to restructure the railway service and sell it to a private entity.
He said attempts were made previously as well, but unions stood firm and prevented Sri Lanka Railways from being privatised.
SP Vithanage noted that they will educate other unions pertaining to the move. He said they will not only defeat the attempts of the government; they will also not hesitate to defeat the government itself.
