Trade unionist Ananda Palitha says uncertainty prevails over when the next fuel shipment is due to arrive in the country.
Speaking to NewsRadio, Palitha said the duration of power cuts could increase from Monday.
He said the clash at the filling station in Athurugiriya last night was a result of fuel bowsers being dispatched outside of what was indicated on the mobile app introduced by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation that issues updates on fuel availability.
However, Palitha charged that fuel is being distributed outside of the indicators of the CPC app after being dispatched from the Muthurajawela and Kolonnawa storage terminals.
He noted that while a Letter of Credit of USD 42 million has been opened for a fuel shipment, dates for the arrival of the shipment have not been announced yet.
He said 85% of filling stations have not received fuel adding that queues will continue to increase.
Palitha said they are revealing such information not with the intention of inconveniencing the public but to raise awareness and to compel the government to take action.
He said the distribution of fuel outside of the app has led to public unrest while the Police and the STF have been deployed to quell the unrest at filling stations.
