The March 12 Movement says an unbiased and active investigation must be conducted into the charges levelled against State Minister Lohan Ratwatte.
In a statement the Movement said the offensive behaviour of a member of the governing party and his attempts to engage in a criminal act is concerning and therefore called for prompt action.
The March 12 Movement said his resignation from the post of State Minister of Prisons is a testament to his involvement in the events.
They claim that if a prisoner is treated with contempt by a person of privilege in the government, it should be viewed with contempt and disdain by society.
They expressed disbelief that the Sri Lanka Police is yet to initiate an investigation and has failed to question the individual in question despite a complaint being lodged with the Criminal Investigation Department.
Therefore, the Movement emphasised that it is the duty of the Inspector General of Police to restore the rule of law that is gradually waning in the country.
The Movement added it is imperative that a committee comprising respected professionals in society must be appointed to stringently investigate the incident.
They also called on the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna to temporarily suspend Lohan Ratwatte’s party membership and review his indiscipline.
