Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the United Nations has arranged for a worldwide public appeal on Thursday.
Speaking in Parliament, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the UN is seeking support to provide humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka.
Through this project, the UN is planning to provide $48 million over a four-month period to the food, agriculture and health sectors.
The Prime Minister said in order to rebuild the country the government must also pay close attention to Sri Lanka’s foreign relations and to increase international support.
Premier Wickremesinghe said Sri Lanka is becoming a marginalized country in the world due to poor foreign policies.
The Premier noted he is in constant consultation with foreign ambassadors to resolve the current crisis.
The Prime Minister said discussions have been held with representatives of international organizations such as the United Nations, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Program, the United Nations Development Program and the World Health Organization.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said many representatives of these countries and international organizations have agreed to support Sri Lanka during this difficult time.
The Prime Minister stressed that Sri Lanka needs to find $6 billion to keep the country afloat for the next six months.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also noted that all factions must set aside the traditional political ideologies for a short period of time and make a concerted effort to rebuild the country.
The Prime Minister noted that the people also have an important role to play to steer the country out of the current crisis.
