The Ministry of Transport will declare open two filling stations to provide diesel for private buses with effect from the 15th of June.
Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardana said the filling stations are situated at Bastian Mawatha, Colombo and the Makumbura Multimodal Centre.
Speaking at a media briefing today the Minister said the government is not disregarding requests for fuel, adding that the country is facing a fuel shortage while Ministries are working towards ensuring the public has fuel and ensuring that essential services can also function.
Minister Gunawardana claimed they cannot provide fuel as and when required, highlighting there is a major crisis and therefore alternate measures are being taken.
Meanwhile, a decision has been reached to expand the school bus service in order to avoid difficulties faced by children amidst the fuel crisis.
Minister Gunawardana said 20 new school bus services will operate from all main entry points to Colombo from the 15th of June.
He acknowledged that parents are compelled to pay a large sum on van fees adding that parents, schools, the Minister of Education, and education officials have requested the Ministry to increase buses part of Sisu Seriya.
However, he noted that amidst financial constraints, the school bus service will be expanded and vowed to increase the number of buses in operation from 20 to 50 in a month.
