Train Guards and Engine Drivers have abstained from reporting to work today.
Trade unions explained that employees were unable to report to work today as they were not provided fuel for transportation.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Railways said several train delays were reported today, while the risk of further train cancellations is high due to the absence of railway employees.
The Department said Train Guards, Station Masters, and Engine Drivers were unable to report for duty owing to the fuel crisis. 22 train journeys were cancelled today (01).
Accordingly, several trains plying from Colombo Fort to Rambukkana, Mirigama and Veyangoda and several trains plying to Chilaw, Panadura and Wadduwa were cancelled.
Sri Lanka Railways said the Udaya Devi train from Colombo Fort to Batticaloa with reserved seats and the cargo train to Avissawella were also cancelled.
The Superintendent of Railways said special arrangements have been made by the General Manager of Railways to provide fuel to Railway employees from the fuel depot operated by Sri Lanka Railways.
