The National Trade Union Coordinating Centre has organised a nationwide strike and protest campaign today against the current government.
The Centre said the decision was taken as the government failed to understand the message of the masses who have taken to the streets.
Convenor of the Centre Ravi Kumudesh said trade unions have a duty to protest against the government in support of the public irrespective of party, grade, or rank.
He added the government has not understood the message of the public despite numerous protests.
Ravi Kumudesh added if the government fails to listen to the people, the economic crisis will prolong unnecessarily.
He requested the government to act responsibly, and said the public has lost faith in the state and the President’s abilities to fulfil their duties.
On a separate note, Kumudesh said Minister Johnston Fernando has continued to support the government despite the numerous mistakes the present administration has made.
He said such Ministers have resorted to threatening the public and peaceful protestors fighting for the future of the country and making intimidating speeches in Parliament.
Kumudesh said such individuals have placed henchmen and thugs outside their offices to intimidate those fighting for their children’s future.
Kumudesh said it was clear the government has not understood the message of the public.
