Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardana has requested exporters to work in a manner that upholds the standards and trust when exporting goods.
Speaking during an event yesterday at the Trade Ministry, Minister Gunawardana said if low-quality goods are exported for the mere purpose of profiting, the country’s reputation will be tarnished.
He said Sri Lanka produces quality pepper, adding that due to the mixture of other components that don’t comply with the accepted standard, the market has been affected and the price has dropped.
The Minister said dust tea being exported instead of quality tea also affects the market, while the gem industry is also affected when fake stones are exported.
Therefore, the Minister requested businessmen to ensure they export quality goods, to ensure a steady market and price.
He also claimed that a market opportunity has arisen for natural treacle, adding that the mixture of sugar reduces the standard and quality of genuine treacle.
