Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has confirmed Japan has expressed interest in having Tokyo as a meeting place for a donor conference.
Speaking to Aljazeera, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the main players of the conference will be Japan, India and China.
The Premier noted, the proposed conference will be a unique meeting with the participation of two members of the QUAD – India and Japan – and China, which runs the global infrastructure project the Belt and Road Initiative.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe stressed, it will be a geopolitical conference of interest, which Sri Lanka is hoping to benefit amidst the current economic challenges.
Premier Wickremesinghe also acknowledged the role played by India in the past weeks in supporting Sri Lanka.
India has provided Sri Lanka with much-needed credit lines to buy fuel.
The Prime Minister said “India has always been a major player. They can’t have instability at their doorstep. Instability in Sri Lanka is not in India’s interest.”
