The Federation of University Teachers’ Associations says three student activists arrested during a recent protest have contracted COVID-19 while in custody.
The trio was arrested on the 3rd, 5th and 6th of August respectively while being part of a demonstration against the proposed General Sir John Kotelawala National Defence University Bill.
Speaking during a media briefing in Kandy today, FUTA President Professor Shyama Banneheka said all three tested negative for COVID-19 at the time of the arrest and therefore they had been infected while being in prison.
He said the trio was arrested on charges of damaging public property and was refused bail.
Professor Shyama Banneheka noted they are now being held in custody for over 20 days and said he believes it could be a deliberate attempt by authorities to expose the trio to COVID-19.
He said it is a dangerous situation which should be avoided at all costs.
