Minister of Mass Media Dullas Alahapperuma today cited three main factors that lead to child abuse incidents in the country.
Speaking during an event this morning, Minister Alahapperuma said the education system that does not educate children, the legal system that does not protect children and the breakdown in communication are the three main factors.
The Minister said he is the first individual to be held responsible for the breakdown in communication as the Minister of Mass Media.
He said UNICEF named 60 countries that recognise rights of children adding 57 of them were Western countries while Japan, Singapore, and South Korea were the only Asian countries represented.
The Minister said child abuse doesn’t only include sexual abuse but metal and physical abuse as well.
Minister Alahapperuma said the current education system does not educate children and instead conceals information adding attempts to provide necessary education is also disrupted by protests.
The Minister said there are no ethics when reporting such incidents.
Furthermore, commenting on issues that need to be addressed when reporting incidents regarding children, Minister Alahapperuma said reporting must also reflect the general concerns towards children.
