Foreign Minister GL Peiris claims that several Sri Lankan Embassies and Consulates were closed as a temporary measure.

The Minister said the government will consider reopening the diplomatic offices within a year.

Speaking at a media briefing today, Minister Peiris said the Sri Lankan Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, the Embassy in Oslo, Norway and the Consulate in Sydney, Australia were closed due to the prevailing dollar shortage.

He added the decision was reached based on the economic situation and financial resources in the country.

The Foreign Minister said each country reaches such decisions adding that certain diplomatic offices close, open in another country, or establish joint offices.

He noted that timely decisions must be reached based on developments in the country.
