The National Election Commission says persons residing in rented houses, leased buildings or even if they are residing in an unauthorised dwelling, they can still register as an elector, if they fulfil other criterions.
The Election Commission said it does not consider building ownership as a requirement when including names in the election register.
The Commission said the consent of the owner of the property is also not required.
The Election Commission stressed that it is a punishable offence to prevent an individual from registering as an elector.
It said courts can punish such persons with a prison sentence and or a fine.
