Member of Parliament Ashok Abeysinghe says it is imperative to find new meaning for the word ‘prosperity’ due to the actions of the government.

MP Abeysinghe said during the past two years, the government has taken the country to new heights.

He said in 2020, Sri Lanka was ranked 94th in the Corruption Perceptions Index and now the country is ranked 102nd.

MP Ashok Abeysinghe claimed due to corruption being rife in the country, Sri Lanka’s standings in the world have also dropped.

He added Sri Lanka is now ranked 12th among countries with the highest inflation.

MP Abeysinghe noted that Sri Lanka’s inflation is around 12 to 13 percent while food inflation is at 25 percent.

State Minister Duminda Dissanayake also expressed his views during the debate in Parliament yesterday.

The State Minister said the mandate granted by the people should be used diligently and requested Members of Parliament to support the forthcoming Renewable Energy Bill to be tabled in Parliament.

State Minister Dissanayake said those in power cannot claim that they were unable to fulfil their promises due to a mafia.

He said the word mafia is popular amongst politicians.

The State Minister questioned why the public should vote for new governments if mafias control the country.

State Minister Dissanayake noted he is determined to make a change.

He said he sought approval for the new Renewable Energy Bill from the Cabinet and is expecting the support of all MPs to pass the legislation.

He also requested the support for renewable energy initiatives from all factions outside of Parliament as well.

Meanwhile, Parliament is due to convene at 10 am today.
