A tense situation has been reported after university students commenced protesting opposite the residence of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa down Wijerama Mawatha.
Inter University Students Federation members commenced a protest march from the Colombo Fort Railway station this afternoon.
IUSF members had announced that they are heading to Galle Face green via Maradana and Borella.
NewsRadio correspondent said a heated situation was reported when protesters attempted to bring down the barricades opposite the residence of the Prime Minister.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of the President and the government.
Convenor of the IUSF Wasantha Mudalige said the protest march got underway at noon and they are peacefully staging the protest while demanding the resignation of the present administration.
Wasantha Mudalige said thousands of youth are protesting for days at Galle Face green, but the government is continuing to function by merely shuffling the pack.
He said the government has failed to provide any solutions to the issues faced by the public.
Mudalige charged that instead of addressing people’s grievances orders were issued to open fire at protesters.
He said this government is not required any longer, adding they will work towards overthrowing the current government.
Wasantha Mudalige said Police have also cordoned off several roads and fulfilling the needs of the government while inconveniencing the general public.
Meanwhile, road blocks have been setup along all entry points to the Presidential Secretariat.
Police said the Lotus Road in Colombo Fort has also been closed and have requested motorists to use alternative roads.
