The Teachers’ and Principals’ Trade Union Alliance has reached a decision to call off all trade union action that was suspended till the 22nd of January.
The decision was reached following the issuance of the circular to resolve teachers’ and principals’ salary anomalies.
Speaking during a media briefing held in Colombo, President of the All Ceylon United Teachers’ Union Venerable Yalewela Pannasekara Thera said the victory was achieved through various sacrifices.
Pannasekara Thera said through the circular, teachers and principals have received only one third of the salary increment due, claiming that it wasn’t a benefit granted by authorities.
The Thera noted therefore they will continue the struggle until authorities resolve the salary anomalies issue which has been prevalent since 1994.
Joining the media briefing General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe said the struggle to obtain the salary allowance, as recommended in the Subodhini committee report will be continued.
He said the issuance of the circular was a great victory achieved by teachers and principals across the country adding that the fight will not end now.
Jayasinghe said although they called for the recommendation of the Subodhini committee report to be implemented, they were given only one third of the recommended amount.
He added therefore the struggle to gain the rest of their demands will continue.
Mahinda Jayasinghe said however trade union action that was launched over salary anomalies, which were suspended temporarily, will be called off.
