Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha says the number of school days will not be restricted due to the prevalent economic crisis.
Teachers unions had requested the Ministry of Education to formulate a schedule to bring in students and for teachers to come into school every three days.
Speaking to media, Chief Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union Joseph Stalin said he requested the Minister to formulate a schedule for a teacher to come into work for only three days while school functions during five days.
He said such a system will provide relief to teachers from at least one aspect. Stalin said the proposal was not aimed at decreasing school days adding a method similar to that followed during COVID-19 should be enforced for students to come into school.
He said failure to do so should result in fuel concessions being provided instead.
The Chief Secretary claimed students’ education will be hindered due to the government’s actions adding students already suffered a similar fate during the past two years.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said discussions will be held with teachers’ unions pertaining to existing issues.
However, the Minister claimed no decision has thus far been reached to limit the number of school days.
Minister Premajayantha added that all matters pertaining to the education sector were discussed last Friday during a round of talks with all teacher principal trade unions.
He said various proposals were tabled during the discussions adding however everyone was of the view that a resolution must be sought without hindering the process to complete the syllabi.
The Minister said the Education Ministry will announce the decision within the next few days after holding further discussions with the relevant trade unions.
