National People’s Power Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath says tea planters don’t have sufficient fertiliser and are facing difficulties, as the government has failed to meet the fertiliser requirement.

MP Herath joining the Parliament debate today said between Rs.7,000-Rs.8,000 is required in order to purchase fertiliser.

He also claimed that tea plantation owners raised their concerns adding that making growth estimates and speaking of achieving targets alone is futile if the demand for tea, which is a key dollar generating crop, cannot be met due to the shortage of fertiliser.

The Parliamentarian stated that some planters have abandoned the industry owing to such shortcomings.

MP Herath on a separate note said the Rs.1,000 daily allowance is not being provided to both private and state sector estate workers.

He said as a policy decision was reached, steps must be taken to enforce the regulation.
