The opposition reiterates that the government should seek medium to long-term solutions to the prevailing financial crisis while taking steps to restructure the country’s foreign debt.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Niroshan Perera said the dollar crisis cannot be resolved through temporary measures.
MP Perera noted that the present administration is seeking swap deals and bringing down one or two vessels carrying fuel, to deal with the prevailing dollar and energy crises.
He stressed that the opposition has been urging the government to restructure the foreign loans for a considerable period of time.
MP Niroshan Perera said however, is not prepared to listen to the opposition and has been taking arbitrary decisions.
He said the government’s mismanagement has also contributed to the current state of the country.
MP Niroshan Perera added when the people express their views and their frustrations while standing in queues to purchase essentials, the government instead of providing solutions to such concerns have been working to silence them.
Parliamentarian Niroshan Perera also noted that the present administration failed to provide a solution for the dollar crisis through the 2022 Budget.
MP Perera said the country is facing an economic crisis within a few months after the budget tabled by the Minister of Finance.
The MP said MPs Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila are not with the present administration after being sacked adding however other constituent parties are still with the government.
The MP said members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, and Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara are still holding their Ministerial portfolios.
MP Perera said they are directing their attention to the actions of these individuals in Parliament from tomorrow.
He said government-affiliated parties irrespective of their claims will continue to support the present administration.
The Parliamentarian said the government would not have been able to take arbitrary actions if continent parties had voiced their concerns, adding however that these individuals continue to support the government.
