Seven suspects who pled guilty to a ragging incident that resulted in the death of Ovitigala Vithanage Samantha at the Sri Jayewardenepura University 20 years ago have been issued rigorous prison sentences.
The order was issued by the Colombo High Court judge Manjula Tillekeratne today (1).
Samantha died on the 7th of November 2002 in the ragging.
The 17th defendant in the case was sentenced to eight years and three months of rigorous imprisonment while another suspect who pled guilty to 10 indictments was sentenced to a three year and two-month rigorous prison sentence.
Four suspects who pled guilty to 10 charges were sentenced to a five-year prison sentence suspended to six months and fined Rs.38,000.
Another suspect was issued a five-year suspended sentence and fined Rs.6,000.
The first, second, 16th, and 22nd defendants in the case were ordered to pay the aggrieved Rs.500,000 each.
