A suspect who jumped from a window of the fifth floor of the building of the Criminal Investigation Department has died upon admission to the Colombo National Hospital after sustaining critical injuries.
The 46-year-old female is a resident of Pannipitiya.
Police said she was arrested by the Special Investigation Unit of the CID.
She was arrested yesterday following a complaint lodged by a state bank pertaining to fraudulent documents, impersonating another individual, and defrauding over Rs.68 million.
The deceased had used fake names and contact details to set up lending facilities for women in Angoda, Rajagiriya, and Wellampitiya.
Investigations revealed that the deceased misled applicants claiming loans amounting to Rs.50,000 can be obtained from state banks and had used their documents to withdraw funds ranging from between Rs.100,000 to Rs.1.5 million.
The incident took place today when the suspect was being held by the CID to be produced before the Fort Magistrate’s Court.
Meanwhile, a separate investigation has been launched under the supervision of a Senior Superintendent of Police to determine whether Policemen who were present at the scene neglected their duties.
The Fort Police is conducting further investigations.
