The Director of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital says routine surgeries at the hospital have resumed after relevant officials had agreed to supply necessary drugs and equipment.
When inquired by NewsRadio, Director Dr. Arjuna Tillekeratne confirmed the development.
A number of media outlets this morning reported that surgeries at the Peradeniya hospital have been suspended owing to lack of drugs and equipment.
Dr. Arjuna Tillekeratne said however the decision has been reversed following an assurance given by the Medical Supply Division to release necessary anesthetic drugs and other equipment.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister of India Dr. S Jaishankar who is currently in Sri Lanka said he was disturbed by the news pertaining to the suspension of surgeries at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.
Minister Jaishankar said he has requested Indian High Commissioner in Colombo Gopal Baglay to contact and discuss how India can assist to resolve the matter.
Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission had contacted the Dean of Medical Faculty of Peradeniya University, Prof. MD Lamawansa and inquired into the requirement of medicines to continue regular and scheduled surgeries at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.
