National People’s Power Parliamentarian Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says suspicions have arisen over whether the Surcharge Tax Bill was introduced to embezzle the workers’ savings in the Employees Provident Fund.

Speaking in Parliament today, MP Amarasuriya claimed the Minister of Finance was not unaware that a surcharge of 25 percent will be levied on EPF savings through the Surcharge Tax Bill.

MP Amarasuriya stated therefore the move is unfair.

She stressed the opposition will not allow the Surcharge Tax Bill to affect the EPF savings and the Pension Fund.

Joining the debate Chief Opposition Whip Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said everyone is aware that Court is now acquitting several government members from cases, which is regrettable and humorous.

MP Kiriella claimed he does not blame the Court as it issues verdicts based on how the investigations were carried out pertaining to the complaint.

The MP added the relevant cases were filed when the present Chief Justice was the Attorney General.

MP Kiriella claimed the complaints were not investigated in a stringent manner and the cases were filed in a manner that will allow the accused to be acquitted from the case.
