Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian Prof. Ranjith Bandara says a kilogram of sugar can be sold at Rs.110, as the import duty was reduced to Rs.0.25.

Speaking during a media briefing today at the SLPP headquarters in Battaramulla, MP Bandara said 584,000MT of sugar was imported between the 14th of October 2020 and the 30th of July 2021, since the duty was reduced.

The Parliamentarian said 35,000MT of sugar is required to meet the monthly consumer demand.

He said a kilogram of sugar at the time of import is Rs.87.50, and has now increased to Rs.90.

He added the sugar price should be less than Rs.110 even if Rs.15 is added to the value.

The Parliamentarian said the government does not hold any grudges against businessmen nor do they want to disrupt businesses.

He said there are clear laws in the country adding these individuals will be brought before Court and punished accordingly.
