The Samagi Jana Balawegaya calls on the government to submit the written permission of the Minister of Finance to increase fuel prices to Parliament immediately.

Speaking in Parliament today, Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva said the recent increase in fuel prices was illegal.

MP de Silva said the government yesterday assured that the written request from the Finance Minister to increase fuel prices will be tabled in Parliament adding the government has failed to table the written authority for three days.

The Parliamentarian said fuel prices cannot be increased without the written approval from the Finance Minister in accordance with Section 66 of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Act (No. 28 of 1961).

He said the fuel price hike resulted in the death of an individual and has created further unrest.

The MP called on Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to take necessary steps.

Responding to the MP, Prime Minister Rajapaksa claimed the document will be tabled at an adequate moment.

Joining the debate Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Nalin Bandara said protocols within the Police force specify how one must act when dispersing protestors.

Speaking in parliament today, he revealed that the code states the Leader of the unrest must be captured.

Parliamentarian Bandara commented that police are instructed to refrain from firing at protestors if they are fleeing the scene.

He alleged that SSP Thilakaratne who is the current Deputy Inspector General of the Criminal Investigations Department is responsible for Tuesday’s incident.

MP Nalin Bandara called on authorities to hand over the investigation to the Police Special Investigation Unit, instead of the CID.

Also speaking in Parliament today MP Sarath Weerasekera requested MP Manusha Nanayakkara to make a statement before the Criminal Investigations Department over any information he has on the Easter Attack Perpetrators.

He stressed that parliamentarians must not lie in parliament under parliament privileges.

MP Sarath Weerasekera said individuals must not try to seek fame and publicity, on the deaths of hundreds.

He challenged the Opposition to take legal action against former President Sirisena, and let the Attorney General to continue to do his duties.
