Former President Maithripala Sirisena claims the actions of Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage led to a crisis in the agricultural sector.
Speaking during the committee stage debate of the 2022 Budget in Parliament, former President Sirisena said it is regrettable that Minister Aluthgamage lied to the President, Cabinet, Parliament, public, farmers and consumers.
He claimed it created a crisis in the agriculture industry and led to public displeasure towards the government.
The former President said therefore Minister Aluthgamage is responsible for the current situation, adding Minister Aluthgamage always claims he has necessary stocks and reports.
He added however if there are stocks, they must be released and not kept concealed. In response Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said he carried out the policy of the government and worked for the government.
Minister Aluthgamage noted he took responsibility as the Agriculture Minister.
He stressed he hasn’t lied adding that he fulfilled his duties as the subject Minister.
