Secretary of the Ministry of Defence General (Rtd.) Kamal Gunaratne has called for an end to the prevailing violence.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence yesterday announced that security forces have been given orders to shoot all persons who destroy public property or cause harm to human lives.

Speaking to media, the Defence Secretary therefore requested all youth involved in demonstrations, to bring to an end the acts of violence and to engage in peaceful protests in a democratic manner without setting properties on fire.

He noted that if such acts of violence continue Police and Security Forces will be compelled to enforce the law sternly.

General Gunaratne said the law will be enforced against persons who attempt to take the law into their own hands.
