Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara has warned that the Police will pursue stern legal action against parties who cause damage to public property under the guise of engaging in protests.
Issuing a special statement, the Minister said engaging in protests is a democratic and constitutional right of the people and that the government will not impede this right.
However, the Minister said anyone causing damage to property and engaging in disorderly conduct by breaking into houses and shops will face legal action.
The Minister said the Police has been instructed to differentiate peaceful protestors and members of the media who are engaging in their duties, adding that such individuals will not be harassed by law enforcement officers.
The Minister claimed the damage caused to public property due to the protest in Mirihana exceeded Rs.39 million while 17 Policeman sustained injuries.
He claimed members of the Police were carrying out their duty amidst numerous difficulties.
Minister Sarath Weerasekara said the government is sensitive to the plight of the public and claimed many countries around the world were facing similar issues.
He claimed the government will attempt to solve the issues faced by the public while upholding the rule of the law.
