State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura says that the proposed surcharge is not an unfair tax.
Speaking to media in Embilipitiya, State Minister Wakkumbura noted that the government will never take decisions that are unfair to the workers and contributors to the Employees Provident Fund.
He said not only the EPF, but several businesses and private sector establishments will be subject to the new tax.
The State Minister said the government instead of imposing a tax on all citizens is levying a selected number of businesses.
He said the government requires a tax income to address the issues faced by the people.
State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura said several countries have also imposed similar taxes.
He claimed that the present administration will not burden the EPF members or the public since they work for the wellbeing of the people and the country.
