The National Election Commission says the public will lose faith in the electoral system and democracy if public representatives decide to enter prisons and intimidate inmates.
Chairman of Commission Nimal Punchihewa said the public will have doubts about free and fair elections if incidents such as State Minister Lohan Ratawatte allegedly entering the Welikada and Anuradhapura Prisons and intimidating inmates are repeated.
Chairman Nimal Punchihewa said the Commission decided to request Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to take appropriate action on the matter to ensure the public’s faith is restored.
