Parliamentarian Ashoka Abeysinghe says Sri Lanka’s debt burden has increased to Rs. 17.6 trillion.
Speaking during the Budget debate in Parliament today, MP Abeysinghe pointed out that foreign debt increased by Rs. 9,875 billion during the 11 years of Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s tenure.
As a result, MP Abeysinghe said per capita debt shot up to Rs.500,000 and at present noted that the figure is at Rs. 850,000.
He said the per capita debt in 2005 was only Rs. 95,000. The Parliamentarian blamed all such issues on the GDP not increasing in proportion to the rate of borrowing.
He recalled how many spoke of Minister Basil Rajapaksa delivering miracles through the 2022 budget, but instead resulted in inflation increasing to an all-time high of 9.9%.
Parliamentarian Ashoka Abeysinghe commented that it would increase further for food items.
