The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says the country will lose the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus trade concession due to serious issues such as a democratic crisis, lack of good governance and interference of the judiciary.
Speaking during a media briefing this morning Parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna said the country will go bankrupt in the near future, if the GSP+ concession is terminated.
MP Rajakaruna said representatives of the European Union visited the country to assess the situation.
On a separate note, The Parliamentarian attributed the actions of the present administration as the main reason for the shortage of dollars in the country.
He said the agriculture and plantation industries were the least affected by the COVID-19 pandemic adding however the government disrupted its operations through the decision to ban the import of fertiliser.
MP Rajakaruna said the country would have been able to earn foreign exchange by exporting tea, rubber and coconut adding the government introduced the organic fertiliser scheme due to the lack of foreign exchange.
He said the present administration came into power claiming to provide fertiliser for free.
MP Rajakaruna requested the government to provide a bundle of fertiliser for at least Rs.4,000.
