Sri Lanka is set to elect a new President in the next 72 hours.
Last week, Sri Lanka’s Seventh Executive President Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned from his post following weeks-long protests.
Accordingly, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed as the Acting President to steer the country in the interim.
Meanwhile, last week, Parliament announced that nominations for the election of President will be accepted tomorrow.
If more than one nomination if submitted, a Parliamentary vote will be taken up on Wednesday to elect the new President.
So far, Sajith Premadasa, Dullas Alahapperuma and Anura Kumara Dissanayake have announced that they will contest this week’s election to become the President.
Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe has not made an announcement in this regard thus far despite the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna announcing that it will support the Acting President to become the next Head of State.
Several discussions are expected to be held in the next few hours as Parliament is scheduled to appoint a new President for the next two years.
