Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has emphasised the importance of winning back the confidence of the international community.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe has noted that in order for Sri Lanka to overcome the current economic crisis, the support of friendly nations as well as donor agencies is imperative.
The Premier has stressed that India has been supporting Sri Lanka in numerous ways in the past few months including through credit lines to purchase fuel and medicine.
Speaking during a discussion, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe noted that Sri Lanka is in need of a few billion US dollars in the short-run to overcome the crisis.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe added that Sri Lanka also needs to win back the confidence of countries such as Japan, as Japan has been a close friend of the country and has helped in overcoming past crises.
Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe said discussions with the International Monetary Fund and other donor agencies are progressing at present.
The Premier noted that bridging financing is essential till the government receives help from the IMF and other agencies.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that they are also working to overcome the impending food crisis.
The Premier said many countries will be affected by the Ukraine crisis in the coming months.
The Prime Minister said however Sri Lanka’s case is unique as the government is battling several issues at once.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stressed that an export-oriented economy is the path for Sri Lanka for recovery in the long-run.
The Premier said until long-term solutions are reached, he requires the support of all factions to address the current issues faced by the public.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to make a special statement in Parliament tomorrow regarding the current financial situation of the country.
