Police say spreading Police intelligence information through social media and other means is a punishable offence under the Penal Code.
The Police therefore requested the public to refrain from spreading such information through social media and other means.
The Police Headquarters issued a statement in response to a document being circulated on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, based on a letter reportedly directed by the Western Province Intelligence Division.
Police said although the relevant letter was directed by the Director of the Western Province Intelligence Unit, the accuracy of the information regarding the WhatsApp group is unconfirmed.
Police noted such an incident cannot be confirmed based only on intelligence information that is reported.
In the statement, the Police said revealing documents containing secret information reported by intelligence units, or such information, is a punishable offence under the Official Secrets Act, and spreading information that is a risk to public security via the internet is a punishable offence under the Computer Crime Act.
