The Department of Irrigation says the spill gates that were opened owing to the inclement weather are gradually being closed.
Engineer of Water Management of the Department D Abeysiriwardena said eight main reservoirs have reached maximum capacity with the total capacity of reservoirs in the island increasing to 60 percent.
He requested the public to remain vigilant regarding the water levels of rivers as showers have been predicted this evening.
Abeysiriwardena said heavy showers were not experienced over the island during the past 24-hours and as a result the risk of flooding is minimal.
He added of 73 main reservoirs, spill gates of 23 reservoirs remain open while of 171 medium-scale reservoirs, spill gates of 65 remain open as of this evening.
The Engineer added sufficient water has been released for harvesting while hydropower plants also utilised capacities for power generation, adding that the water levels were therefore duly managed.
